Rare painted oval top tavern table, ca. 1680 - 1710, New England, probably Massachusetts.  An exceptional, perfectly proportioned tavern table.  Satisfying surface of early brown paint over earlier red, over traces of blue.  The oval top generously overhangs the deep apron that has molded edges.  The stretcher base, also with molded edges, supports the bulbous vase and ring turned legs.  All pegged construction.  Maple, with pine secondary wood. This singular tavern table is in extraordinary condition.  Minor loss to button feet.  Dimensions:  oval top 23.5” x 30.5”; height 23.5”. Pictured in Antiques Magazine 1949 article on Mary Allis’s collection.  Provenance: Mary Allis; Mary Black; Edwa Weiss; Thomas Tafuri; Private Collection.
