A striking example of early American folk art, this ca. 1840 New England pine wall box rises above the ordinary through its uniquely abstract paint decoration. Generously proportioned, it features canted sides, a deep storage well, and a tall backboard that gives the piece a strong presence. A soft blue ground is accented by graphic red demi-lunes at the center front and corners. Simple, almost whimsical stick-figure-like trees decorate the front and sides, imparting a charming character and vernacular appeal.
Decorative and functional, this distinctive wall box expresses the simplicity and artistic individuality of 19th-century rural New England folk art. Provenance: Warwick Collection; Stephen Score. Dimensions: width 14.25”; depth 3.75 at the bottom, 5.25” at the top; height of box 4.5” at the front, 7” at the back; overall height 13”.
