An early 19th century rural, country American Pole Screen is a rare find.  Most likely from New England, it is constructed of wood and has the original green-painted surface.   The rectangular screen contains an early piece of embroidered crewelwork.  The slender upright support is adjustable, the height secured with a wooden peg.  The support terminates in a classic cross-shaped base. This piece was both a practical household accessory and a decorative accent, traditionally used to shield the face from the heat of a fireplace. Its timeworn character offers a glimpse into early 19th-century American domestic life.  Dimensions:  overall height 48”; cross base 14.5” x 14.5”; screen area: 18.5” x 15”.
