Rare pair sister and brother dolls, ca. 1890 with special features and wonderful expressions.  They are made of heavy black cotton fabric. Their clothes are all hand sewn and appear to be original. 

 

He has an applied mouth, pinched nose, ruffled ears, and embroidered eyes.  He has mitten hands and tiny upturned feet.  His shirt is made of a lightweight cotton with a stand-up collar, rolled-up cuffs, and open front.  His coveralls are a pink woven cotton and have rolled-up cuffs too.

 

Her face is beautifully embroidered with a pinched nose. Her hair is black wool that was sewn in loops to mimic curls.  She has mitten hands and is bandy legged.  She is wearing a pink loosely woven dress over a snug fitting dress in a darker pink cotton fabric.

 

They bend at the hips and sit well.  Both in very fine condition.  Dimensions:  She is 13” tall; he is 14” tall.  Provenance:  Private Collection.
