Rare 19th century paint decorated sewing box with a pin cushion top and a drawer, ca. 1830. Most likely New York State, possibly New England.  An allover Windsor green paint is embellished with scrolling vines and a center starburst on the sides of the box and the front and drawer.  Four wood chamfered posts support a pin cushion top.  The early embroidered brown linen cover has worn to reveal the original blue and ecru plaid pin cushion top.  A few19th century needles and pins remain.  Inserted into the top of the box under the pin cushion top are three metal rods used to hold spools of thread.  The box is constructed with tiny t-head and square nails that all show expected oxidation.  The box is mounted onto a base that extends a ¼” from the sides.  There is a faint signature in pencil on the back of the drawer.  In very fine condition, with wear to the pin cushion fabric as described.  Dimensions:  Box w6” x d4 3/8” x h4”; height to top of pin cushion 8.5”.
