Carved oak document or valuables box ca. 1650. Well-developed carvings of fleur-de-lis and rosettes on all four sides of the box. The box is constructed with very tiny wrought nails. The lock plate and hinges are secured with iron rose head rivets. This box was included in the March 1960 exhibit at the Detroit Institute of the Arts entitled, American Folk Arts from the Collection of Ruth and James O. Keene, wherein it was captioned “Document Box, probably Massachusetts, 1650”. Original surface; minor wear. Provenance: Ruth and James O. Keene Collection; Sotheby’s Important Americana from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. James O. Keene, January 16, 1997. Dimensions: 9” x 5.5” x 3.75”.
