Rare wool applique potholder ca. 1840.  This 19th century textile is a  folk art masterpiece. Two birds sit on embroidered winding vines with flowers and foliage.  Predominate colors are red, a lovely soft blue, sage green and light beige.  Each motif is hand appliqued onto a blue wool base fabric and outlined in a hand-embroidered blanket stitch.  The backing is an early red wool. The entire piece bound in a tan cotton; the hanging loop is the same fabric. In such remarkable original condition, it seems that this piece was intended to display the maker's creativity and skills.
Dimensions:  5.25" x 5.5".
