Eye-catching gathering basket, substantial size, original red painted surface, wood handles and bottom.  Most likely from New England, this basket has a solid wood base similar to Nantucket baskets.  The body is constructed with heavy splint and narrows slightly from the top toward the bottom.  The rim is made with two wood forms and is double wrapped.  The nicely shaped wood handles are inserted between the two sections of the wood rim, and have the warm surface that comes from years of handling, The wood base is attached with small iron staples.  In excellent condition with minor surface wear.  Dimensions:  height 13.75”; diameter across top 17.25”, across bottom 11.5”.
