Well known for his interior portraits and full length sitters, there are few single watercolor profiles by Joseph H. Davis (active 1832-1837).  Although unsigned, the piece is easily identifiable as Davis's work.  At the time "Three New England Watercolor Painters" was published in 1974, there was only one single miniature known (page 23, plate 1).  For additional examples of Davis's work, see "A Loving Likeness; American Folk Portraits of the Nineteenth Century", pgs. 16 & 17.  Also "Three New England Watercolor Painters", pgs. 22 - 41.  Dimensions:  sight 2" x 3.75"; frame 3.5" x 5".
