Rare heart-shaped, cherry wood cheese press. In the 1800s, heart-shaped objects were frequently given by men as gifts to women they were courting. This early piece has developed a deep, warm patina from handling and the presence of moisture drained from the cheese as it was being pressed. The body is made of two pieces that are joined together. The removable heart-shaped lid is lighter in color because it was not exposed to moisture The piece sits on small bun feet attached by early hand-cut screws. Unexpectedly large for a cheese press, this piece can be displayed sitting on a surface, or hung by an old wire that was threaded through two holes on the top.
Dimensions: 7.75" x 9"; height without feet 4.5", with feet 5".
