Rare Bergen County "Great" chair, ca. 1720-1730.  This would have been the chair where the patriarch of the family sat in the evening reading or smoking his pipe.  Bergen County chairs are distinguished by their unusual urn shaped finials.  This chair can also be dated by the cupid's bow slat shaped and sausage turned stretchers.  The paint decoration is a later addition ca. 1820.  The rush fiber seat is a replacement. The chair and paint decoration is in excellent condition. Dimensions:  overall height 46.25"; seat height 15"; trapzoidal shaped seat 22" at widest point x 17".
