Pair of American 18th century well-executed profiles of a lady and gentlemen in ink with blue highlights. They are housed in very rare wallpaper covered frames. The initials “TW” are impressed on both pieces. Citing Alice Van Leer Carrick in her seminal book A History of American Silhouettes, “TW” most likely is Thomas Wollaston who was working as a silhouette artist in the 1760s. The wallpaper covered frames are quite remarkable. The wallpaper collection at Historic New England provides of examples of a wallpaper covered pieces such as band boxes, fireboards, and school book covers dating to the mid-1760s. This period coincides with the time that Wollaston was active. Another interesting find is that behind the silhouette of the lady is an early piece of newspaper that lists the commodity prices of the day. Behind the gentleman is a paper with early period script in sepia ink; on the other side is a receipt. Minor losses to frames; unobtrusive tear to the background of the lady that is concealed by the frame. Dimensions: silhouettes 3” x 4”; frames 4.25” x 5.25”.
